StemCellX, a regenerative medicine company, today announced a partnership agreement with Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden, one of the most visited zoos in Europe, to develop allogeneic stem cell treatments for exotic animals.
The partnership will enable Budapest Zoo and Botanical Gardens to benefit from state-of-the-art treatments to improve the quality of life for a wide range of endangered species.
The first stage of their collaboration is focusing on developing stem cell therapy treatments for the zoo’s gorillas. This collaboration will enable StemCellX to access the ongoing medical records of the zoo’s gorillas and thus assess the positive impact of their treatment and to also conduct research on cell samples.
The team has already obtained high-quality mesenchymal stem cells during a routine medical procedure and established optimal conditions for culturing and formulating these.
"It is very exciting to have a research partnership with Budapest Zoo. We both share a passion for helping animals to live healthier and happier lives and working with gorilla stem cells can help us explore further possibilities in how to achieve this."
Kata Dudas, the lead research scientist from StemcellX, said Tweet
“Stem cell therapies provide new options when treating zoo animals. We encounter several problems, which are developed due to advanced aging, as zoo animals generally live much longer under human care compared to nature. Our common mission is to use stem cells in the novel treatment of chronic joint diseases”.
