Our article “Characterisation and therapeutic application of canine adipose mesenchymal stem cells to treat elbow osteoarthritis” has been published in the CJVR.
By using cytofluorometry we were able to determine the optimal method of culturing allogeneic (coming from a healthy donor) mesenchymal stem cells obtained from adipose tissue to prepare an injectable formulation for treating canine osteoarthritis (OA) and elbow dysplasia. The stem cells were injected into the affected joints of 30 dogs, and a significant improvement of the symptoms was observed during the 1-year follow-up. A control arthroscopy in one of the treated dogs also showed cartilage regeneration, which proves that our novel method of using allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells is highly effective.
